We have had far too many accidents that could have been prevented. So far this year there have been 17 accidents, and that’s 17 too many!
We need to improve our safety culture, so that we all make safety our first priority in all work carried out. We need to THINK safety, be careful and be aware.
In an effort to promote a culture for safety awareness in Kongsberg Automotive plants throughout the world, we are launching “Safety Moments”. The idea with Safety Moments is that people start every meeting or gathering – shift, for example, or management meeting - with a brief safety moment (work related or otherwise) discussion.
Typically one person would start the meeting with a comment about a safety topic he or she has thought about or been concerned with in some way, and the rest of the group discuss. All participants take turns to kick-off the safety moment – not just the leader – but the leader is responsible for making sure that a safety moment is held at every opportunity.
We need to increase the level of health and safety awareness in KA, and ‘Safety Moments’ is one way of doing that. We need everyone everywhere to think about safety in everything they do and everywhere they go,
said Phil Walker, KA’s HSE Director. The intention with Safety Moments, is to bring focus to safety issues in a brief and non-threatening way,” he added.
Kongsberg Automotive has a Health and Safety policy and guidelines to help employees look after their health and safety. We have also identified hazards and taken steps to minimize risks, but it is ultimately our own responsibility to look after our health and safety, understanding the hazards at our workplace, taking up concerns with our leaders, reading the safe work procedures and taking all necessary precautions.
I hope that implementing safety moments will make us all more aware of health and safety issues, and improve our ability to put safety first. Let’s work safe and live safe – and reduce the number of accidents at the workplace to zero! concluded Phil.
Town hall meetings will be taking place in each Segment shortly to provide further information and guidance.
