Rear axle stabilizer for Volvo Trucks
The new Volvo truck range has been recognized for its innovative suspension and improved handling and stability. The core of this technology is the new rear axle stabilizer developed by Kongsberg Automotive.
Kongsberg Automotive has collaborated with Volvo for several years for developing the stabilizer for the new Volvo rear suspension geometry. The stabilizer was moved directly beneath the axle, providing direct roll load transfer into the stabilizer and thus greatly improving roll behavior. Also, this freed up valuable space at the end of the truck.
30 percent weight saving
The rear axle stabilizer features high strength forged link arms, high strength tube formed with innovative new forming technology and a unique welding method. The compact design also offers weight savings of more than 30 percent compared to traditional solid rod stabilizers.
Our strong customer focus has contributed to the success in development of the rear axle stabilizer. In addition, the project has benefitted from Kongsberg Automotive’s advanced vehicle dynamics know-how along with interest in pushing the boundaries for materials and mechanical design.
The result was an advanced rear axle stabilizer which can meet extremely high loads in a very compact solution, says Research & Development Manager, Simen Skiaker
Innovative design
Unique production methods have also been developed to achieve innovative design solutions. Close collaboration with our customer was a key to success, as we always sought to develop the optimal product with their best interest in mind.
